Governor Wichai Phraisa-ngop briefs Phuket police officers as they
prepare to man road checkpoints over the Songkran holiday period.
PHUKET:
Phuket Governor Wichai Phraisa-ngop has assigned three of his
vice-governors to oversee checkpoint inspections on the island during
the Songkran holiday period.
Worapoj Ratthasima will be
responsible for Muang District, Tri Augkaradacha for Thalang District
and Smith Palawatvichai for Kathu District.
Gov Wichai made the announcement outside Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday.
As
well as the nine primary checkpoints previously announced, nine
secondary checkpoints will be set up at additional locations. The
checkpoints will operate 24 hours a day until April 16.
Particular emphasis will be placed on checking for drink driving, Gov Wichai said.
The
authorities will also crack down on boat safety, with checks to ensure
that vessels are not overloaded and that they are fitted with enough
life-saving equipment.
Meanwhile Region 8 Marine Police
Superintendent Anant Huangsaithong said that five Marine Police vessels
would be patrolling Phuket’s waters during the period.
In the event of an emergency, divers could be deployed to any location within half an hour, Pol Col Anant added.
